This month we’re traveling to….. Sicily!
As the old rhyme goes 'big boot Italy kicked little Sicily right in to the Mediterranean Sea' and we're mighty glad it did.
The islands typical Mediterranean conditions, think constant sunshine and occasional rainfall, make it an ideal environment for growing and fermenting grapes. Coastal breezes mean the vineyards are naturally well ventilated and disease free, which results a more organic and hands off approach.
When talking Sicilian reds the big three are native varieties that have been grown on the island for centuries. Nero d'Avola, with its dark berry, bramble fruits and spicy tannins is oft referred to as the King of Grapes. Frappato with its playful aromatics and ease of drinking has had sommeliers waxing lyrical for years. Nerello Mascalese that seductive grape that makes its home on the volcanic soils of Mt. Etna has garnered an almost cult following over the last 20 years with its juicy fruit forward nature underlined by jagged tannins. Add in a supporting cast featuring syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and the odd pinot Nero and Sicily has it all.
Raise a glass with us as we toast this impressive region!
